Frank Grisdale, a lifelong resident of Alberta, Canada (the province that is located directly north of Montana) has dramatically pushed the boundaries of a word used so often with many photographers’ works; painterly. Influenced by the Impressionists, who softened their landscapes to a new realization incorporating light and color, Frank has created work that certainly works around traditional definitions of photography. He draws upon the pristine prairies of Alberta along with the neighboring Canadian Rockies for the subjects of his images. And while he finds his subjects in these dramatic areas, his photographs aren’t so concerned with the details as with shape, line, color and light.
Frank captures his photographs exclusively with film, without a tripod, preferring to realize the ethereal movement found in his images by hand-holding the camera rather than using digital manipulation.
“I want my photography to be more than just the simple documentation of reality. I’ve been told that I’m working in the arena of the sublime, and while you can drive a truck through that word, I think it reflects the meditative, slow-down-the-pulse aspect of all of my images.”
