"My love of realism arises directly from my love of the craft of painting. To create a believable, three-dimensional space of form, light, and atmosphere from the fluid smears of oil paints on a two-dimensioinal surface is a endless challenge and great joy. My love of the landscape arises from the appreciation for the transient yet timeless beauty of the landscape, an appreciation that I share with my two greatest artist influences: the American tonalist painter George Inness and the great classic nature poets of China. Like them, I strive to say as much as possible with as little as possible, to subtlety suggest forms rather than to overtly describe them, and to hint at the greater reality that lies behind the surface of things by leaving some mystery in a painting, something unresolved, that entices the viewer to enter the painting and explore the landscape." ---- John MacDonald, January, 2014
